The significance of yellow vernix in the newborn.

چکیده
Yellow staining of the vernix caseosa of the newborn baby is not uncommon. It occurs sometimes in cases of haemolytic disease due to Rh incompatibility and is a sign of a severely affected infant (Wallerstein, 1948). Otherwise, little attention has been paid to this clinical finding. Clifford (1948) stated that yellow staining of the vernix was observed in about 6 per 1,000 births in the Boston Lying-in Hospital. Of the babies with yellow vernix, 20% had the icterus gravis type of haemolytic disease with a mortality rate of 36% and the remaining 80% of the group had a mortality rate of 6 %. He believes that the yellow vernix in the latter group indicates that severe foetal anoxia, probably due to placental disease, has occurred, days or weeks, before delivery. Smith (1951) suggested that the condition was due to inadequate placental function. The present investigation was carried out in the Simpson Maternity Pavilion, Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh, to determine what factors, other than haemolytic jaundice, cause yellow vernix, and how commonly a poor neonatal prognosis is associated with it. [Influence of neonatal and maternal factors on the prevalence of vernix caseosa].
At birth, vernix caseosa can cover the whole body surface or accumulate only on the back and in the skin folds. Interest in its composition and function and its possible applications in adults has increased in recent years. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of vernix caseosa in newborn infants in the health care area of Ferrol, Spain, and to assess its relationship wit...
متن کاملThe biology of vernix caseosa.
The biology and physical properties of the uniquely human skin cream 'vernix caseosa' are discussed. This material coats the foetal skin surface during the last trimester of gestation and provides multiple beneficial functions for the foetus and newborn infant. Vernix has a complex structure similar to stratum corneum but lacks lipid lamellae and is more plastic due to the absence of desmosomal...
متن کاملNewborn Boys and Girls Differ in the Lipid Composition of Vernix Caseosa
Vernix caseosa protects the skin of a human fetus during the last trimester of pregnancy and of a newborn after the delivery. Besides its cellular and proteinaceous components, an important constituent and functional agent is a complex lipid fraction, implicated in a multitude of salubrious effects of vernix caseosa. Little is known about how the chemical composition of vernix caseosa lipids is...
متن کاملBarrier properties of vernix caseosa.
Experiments are described which show that vernix caseosa has a mechanical barrier effect if it is deposited in an unbroken layer. Specific antibacterial properties were not detected in vernix. It is suggested that vernix is best left on a newborn infant because of its mechanical obstruction to bacterial passage.
متن کاملTransient Evoked Otoacoustic Emission in Neonates with and without Vernix
Transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) are not necessarily recordable in all healthy neonates, before discharge, due to transient conditions (such as vernix in ear canals). To determine the possibility and feasibility of screening of very young newborns before discharge from hospital (JCIH, 2007), it is important to know how vernix in external ear during this time affects screening res...
